Happy Winter Break!

Thanks to all the room parents for a terrific holiday party!  Also thank you for your generous class gift!  We appreciate all that you do and feel so fortunate to be able to work with your children!

Here's the scoop on what's been happening in 4th grade:

Reading- This week we continued our novel studies. We learned how an author uses mood and tone to creates feeling and emotion in a text. In addition, we compared themes across texts. After break, we will be finishing our novel studies!

Writing- This week students completed a nonfiction assessment where they applied their knowledge of nonfiction text features and elements to their own writing.

Math- We took our Unit 7 assessment this week. Graded tests will be coming home in your child's Friday folder. After break, we will begin unit 8 where we will explore area and perimeter.

Social studies- This week we took our Southeast content and states and capitals test. After break, we will be learn about the history of the Southeast and begin creating a travel brochure of the Southeast!

Science- This week we finished up observing our minerals for the properties of cleavage (how a mineral breaks) and specific gravity (our mineral's weight as compared to water) which we tested for lightness or heaviness.  When we get back we'll be trying to correctly identify each mineral based on all of their properties.

**iPad Information: If you haven't already done so, please make sure you watch the iPad Introductory video that Dr. Henrikson sent out last week. After watching the video, you will need to print a permission form and have your child bring it to school on Monday, January 5th.

Friday, December 12th

 Thank you for coming to our Fourth Grade Hero Tribute Tour and 50 Nifty United States concert on Monday night! The kids did a fabulous job- we were so impressed! We raised $222.00 to be used for purchasing hero capes for the children at Central DuPage Hospital! Thank you for your ongoing generosity and support. Reading- Students began their novel study this week and are loving their books! Your child will be traveling with his/her novel to and from school. Please remind your child to put the novel in his/her backpack each night. This week, we also discussed different traits a character can have and the types of characters in fiction texts. Ask your child to infer a trait about the main character of his/her novel.

 Writing- Next week, students will be sharing their published nonfiction books about a pollinator with their first grade buddies!

Math- This week students learned how to multiply fractions by whole numbers and apply this skill to multi-step word problems. Students were sent home with a unit 7 study guide, which is due Monday. Our Unit 7 Assessment will be on Wednesday.

Social studies- Students learned the different types of natural resources, reusable and non reusable, and learn how coal is a natural, non reusable resource of the Southeast region. Next week, we will be reviewing for our Southeast unit and states and capitals test, which is on Friday, December 19th. Please make sure your child reviews his/her study guide coming home on Tuesday. Ask your child to give an example of a reusable and non reusable resource.

Science - Students are continuing to observe their minerals for their different properties.  This week we took look at the hardness of their minerals and compared it to the minerals that are rated on Moh's scale of hardness.  They also tested for whether their mineral left a streak on a scratch plate, whether it fizzed when vinegar was applied, or whether is was magnetic.  Students recorded their observations on their iPad to use throughout our unit and to discover what each mystery mineral's name is.  Ask your child which mineral in their kit was the softest and how they tested for hardness.

SELAS- iCare is December's theme! Students have discussed what it means to care for others and why it is important. We shared the story Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge and created five ways students can show they care about others! Ask your child one way they can show they care about others.

Important Dates to Know:
 - Monday, December 8th: students should bring their costumes to school in a bag.
 - Monday, December 8th at 6:30 P.M. Hero Tribute Tour followed by Fifty Nifty United States Musical Performance.  You won't want to miss it!
- Reading logs due on Friday.

Reading- This week in reading we learned how a fiction text can have elements of trickery, a theme or moral, and different types of characters (static, dynamic, round and flat). Next week, we will begin our guided reading groups with novel studies. Students were introduced to their novels today. Ask your child what novel he/she will be reading.

Writing- We are continuing to polish and publish our nonfiction writing. We also published our hero poems. Please look for these outside of the Hero Tribute Tour on Monday night!

Math- This week we converting fractions to decimals, compared and ordered fractions, and worked on finding the one when given a fractional amount. Also, we explored probability and reviewed landmark data (mean, median, mode). Ask your child how they can convert 2/5 to a decimal without a calculator.

Social studies- This week we continued to explore the Southeast region. Students learned about the variety of natural resources the Southeast region produces. Next week, we will discuss how the demand for oil helped boost the Southeast's economy. Ask your child how the Southeast's long growing season helps the economy.

 Science- Students used iUniversity to begin a class on rocks and minerals.  They will be accessing this class throughout the unit and completing the assignments listed.  This week we started recording information on their minerals' properties.  Students used their iPads to photograph each mineral and then added it to a chart where they recorded a description of each mineral's color, texture, and luster. Ask your child to describe what luster is.

You’re Invited to the 4th Grade Program!

What: Fourth graders will be presenting their Hero Tribute Tour, followed by the 50 Nifty United States musical performance.
When: Monday, December 8th at 6:30pm
Where: Oak School (MRC & Gym)
Why: Students will be collecting donations at the Tribute tour in order to provide hero capes for kids at Central DuPage Hospital.

**Remember to bring your hero costume TO SCHOOL on Monday, December 8th. Students will be presenting their Tribute tour to third grade during the day.

**PARENTS: Please bring a handheld device and headphones, or earbuds, in order to maximum your tribute tour experience.


Reading- We began our fiction unit and discussed the traditional types of fiction including: fables, folk tales, tall tales, myths, and legends. Students learned about the different points of view a story can have: first, second, third (limited & omniscient). Also, we were able to identify the plot elements in a story. Ask your child what plot diagram poster they created today.

Writing- Students worked on publishing their final nonfiction text this week.

Math- Students are continuing to expand their knowledge of fractions. This week we learned how to model fractions using geometric pieces, add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers, and write equivalent fractions. Ask your child to name some equivalent fractions. 

Social Studies- Students created a website to show their knowledge of the Southwest region. Please check out the links below to see which webpage your child created! We began learning about the Southeast region and some of its natural resources. Ask your child how the Mississippi River helps transportation in the Southeast.

Science - This week students began exploring minerals by looking at a penny and observing it carefully.  Then we talked about how scientists, especially geologists, have to be careful observers.  Then students practiced their observational skills by describing 5 different minerals and having their  partner try to match the mineral based on their description.  After break the students will continue to describe the minerals based on their properties and try to figure out their names. Ask your child what properties they used to describe their minerals.

Boy these weeks fly by...

The kids have been busy, busy in all subjects and enjoyed the celebration of the Blue Ribbon assembly on Thursday.  They were able to view photos taken by Mrs. Eggers while she was in Washington D.C. with Mr. Walsh, accepting the award on behalf of Oak school.  The choir sang and Mr. Walsh explained the award to the students along with congratulating them on a job well done.  It was a really nice way to commend all students.  Thanks to the PTO for providing the neat keychains for all.

Reading
This week we wrapped up our nonfiction unit by meeting with strategy groups to work on our individual reading goals, finished synthesizing our hero research, and began recording our opinion statements with Mrs. Morgan Ryan. Next we compared the similarities and differences of poetry, prose, and drama.  We rounded out the week with the students creating their own Hero poems.

Writing
Students continue to draft, edit, and revise their nonfiction pieces.  As we revise students are looking to add authentic details, include voice, make sure they include nonfiction text features.  Next week we'll work on publishing these pieces using the Book Creator application on our iPads.

Math
This week we started fourth grade Unit 7 on fractions.  Students worked to solve "fraction of" problems and make sense of the "whole" when determining fractional parts.  Then we reviewed various math skills while we worked in partners to solve Thanksgiving related story problems.  Today we used our shopping lists to find items from our beloved family recipes and practiced multiplying and subtracting decimals.  It's amazing how quickly it all adds up - but most of us we able to come in under budget.  Thank you parents for helping your child with their list.
Ask your child how much money they had left after purchasing their Thanksgiving meal ingredients.

Science
We began our next science unit on rocks and minerals by watching a short video on Geology.  Students took notes and then learned how to use the Inspiration application on their iPad to web their notes.  We will be adding to our notes throughout the unit and have them to study for our unit test.
Ask your child one way we use rocks or minerals.

Social Studies
This week students created their own website that summarizes their knowledge of the Southwest region. Stay tuned to see our final product! Next week, students will being learning about the Southeast region's climate and landforms. 
Ask your child what information their webpage contained.

Friday, November 7th

Reading- This week we finished our nonfiction unit. Students will be bringing their Nonfiction Assessment home in their Friday folders. Everyone's hero poster looks great! Just a reminder, students will need to bring their costumes to school for the Hero Wax Museum on Monday, December 8th the third grade classes will be previewing our hero exhibits during the school day.
**Save the date you're invited for our evening exhibit, with the musical performance to follow, starting at 6:30pm on 12/8.

Writing- Students are drafting their nonfiction books about the life of their pollinator. Next week, we will move further along in the writing process and start editing and revising our books. Ask your child what text structure they are writing their nonfiction book in.

Math- Students finished Unit 6 this week. We will begin Unit 7 next week. In unit 7, students will learn how to add, subtract, and multiply fractions and mixed numbers, write equivalent fractions, and understand chance and probability. Ask your child how they felt about the math test. What are they proud of/what was challenging?

Social studies- Next week, students will begin learning about the Southeast region! At the end of the Southeast region unit, we will have a states and capitals test on this region. If your child would like to begin preparing for this quiz, they can visit our fourth grade website (under grade level resources) and study the Southeast Quizlet!

Science- Students reviewed for and took their Life Cycles unit test this week which has been sent home in the Friday Folder.  Next week we will begin our Rocks and Minerals unit.  Students will be learning the different types of rocks through observation of their properties.  We will also take a look at the composition of the Earth, volcano types, and the effects of erosion and glaciers.  Finally they will have an understanding of the rock cycle and how rock can be broken down to form new ones. 


Genius Hour Update: Genius Hour is an opportunity for students to research something they are passionate about! Students created a proposal with a driving question to guide their research. Our next step is for students to create an action plan for researching and developing their final product. Ask your child what their Genius Hour topic is.

Happy Halloween!

Reading- Next week, we are wrapping up our nonfiction unit. We are very excited to see the Hero Posters on Wednesday. Please see the website for more details.

Writing- Students have been introduced to several mentor nonfiction texts to show them good examples of nonfiction writing. Next week, we will be drafting and revising our pollinator nonfiction texts.

Word Study - Due to the short week and the two other assessments in science and math, we will not be sending home a new word sort this week.

Math- Next week, we will be finishing Unit 6. Look for a study guide to come home sometime next week. Our Unit 6 Assessment will be on Friday, November 7th.

Social Studies- Students finished the Southwest region this week! Next week, we will be creating a website to summarize all that we have learned about the Southwest region. Stay tuned for more details!

Science- Students harvested their seed pods this week and saw the results of pollination.  Students were given a study guide to complete as well as a review packet to use when studying.  Also check out the resources on our 4th grade website to help your child review for the test.  The test for both classes will be on Thursday, November 6th.

Friday, October 24th

Math- This week in math we learned various strategies for long division and how to interpret the remainder. Next week, we will be continuing to practice long division while learning how to measure angles using a protractor.

Language Arts -
Students finished up their narratives this week!   It is quite an accomplishment as they journeyed through the entire writing process.  It was a pleasure to get to conference with students about their writing and see what great writers they are.   We will now take our research we did in science and use it to jump start us into our nonfiction writing piece.

In reading students began researching their hero candidates by using our essential questions to guide them.  We will continue to work on this research in reading this week as well as synthesize our ideas to draw conclusions about our heroes.  We continue to focus on nonfiction reading skills in our mini-lessons and strategy groups.  

Look for a new word study list to come home on Monday.  Test is on Friday.

Social Studies- Ms. Ingstrup's class took the Southwest region quiz this week. Ms. Hathaway's class will be taking this quiz on Monday. Next week, both classes will be discussing the causes and effects of the Native American land removal.

Science - In science, students made their final Wisconsin Fast Plant measurements, and then removed their plants from the water tanks as they have reached the end of their growing cycle.  This week we will be removing the seed pods and opening them to observe the seeds inside. We will then discuss the research data that we've collected, compare our results with our hypotheses, and draw conclusions regarding our control plants verses our experimental plants.  We also finished researching a pollinator and began planning our nonfiction book layout.  Students will continue to work on this in writing class in the following weeks.

Friday, October 17th

This week certainly flew by!

Reading- This week we set reading goals and selected our hero nonfiction texts. Please look in the Friday folder for the handout describing the hero project and activities. Ask your child what hero candidate they are reading about.

Writing- Next week, we are starting our nonfiction writing unit. We'll be sharing a variety of immersion texts as examples of good writing!

Math- Look for the Unit 5 Test coming home in your child's Friday folder. Next week, we will begin unit 6 on long division strategies and angle measurement. Ask your child about the four properties of multiplication they learned about.

Science- Students began researching a pollinator and began their layout for a nonfiction book describing the life cycle of a plant and their pollinator.  Next week we will be seeing the next phase of the cycle as we harvest the seeds from the pods. Ask your child what pollinator they're learning about.

Social studies- This week, we discussed the climate and natural resources of the southwest region. We watched a video explaining how life was like living in the Dust Bowl. Next week, we will be discussing how natural resources can help a region's economy. Ask your child what is a natural resource of the Southwest.

Friday, October 10th

Reading- Students have familiarized themselves with the five nonfiction text structures: compare & contrast, cause & effect, sequencing, problem solution, and description. Students used fix-up strategies to decode words using word parts. Next week, we are launching our nonfiction hero unit- stay tuned for more details!

Writing- We are continuing to conference with students to revise and edit their narratives.

Math- We are wrapping up unit 5. Look for a study guide to come home on Tuesday. Our Unit 5 Assessment will be on Thursday.

Word Study- Due to the shortened week, there will be no new sort next week.

Social Studies- This week students used their iPads to note-take about the Southwest region. We learned about the southwest's climate and natural resources. Next week, we will discuss longitude and latitude mapping skills.

Science- Students continued to pollinate their Wisconsin Fast Plant flowers this week with our bees.  We are anxiously awaiting the development of the seed pods.  As the seed pods grow, students will be putting together a digital book using their experiences in class, research, and pictures from the Botanical gardens.

Friday, October 3rd

Happy Friday!

Reading- We began our nonfiction unit this week and discussed the various text features that can be found in nonfiction texts and how they can help us as readers to "tune in" to what's important in the text.  Students also learned about the differences between literary nonfiction, biographies, and reference books.

Writing - Students are continuing to edit an revise their writing this week about a time they will never forget.  Students were asked to include dialogue in their writing and be sure to have a strong beginning, middle, and end.  We can't wait to share these with you soon.

Math- This week we learned different methods to solve multiplication problems.  We will be moving on to writing and reading really big numbers and representing these big numbers using powers of 10 and scientific notation.

Social studies- We learned about the Southwest landforms. Students learned new vocabulary describing each landform. Next week, we will be learning about the climate of the Southwest and introduce mapping skills.

Science - In science we learned all about the reproductive parts of a plant and why pollination is an important part of their life cycle.  Students were able to dissect a plant on our field trip to the Botanic Gardens on observe them closely using special hand lenses and microscopes.  Then the students  explored the various gardens to see bees in action and various types of plants in different stages of their life cycles.  Students used their iPads to capture pictures and videos as they explored.  We will be using these photos, along with additional research to create interactive ibooks as a culminating activity to our unit.  It was a great field trip!  Special thanks to the parent chaperones for making it an extra fun day.

Friday, September 26th

Reading- This week we finished our Launching unit and created a comic about an event that took place in our independent reading books. Next week, we will be beginning our nonfiction unit.

Writing- This week we continued drafting and editing our narrative stories about a favorite memory. Next week, we will revise these narratives by adding dialogue and voice in our writing.

Social studies- Next week, we will be learning about the climate and natural resources of the Southwest Region. Students will identify the adaptations needed to live in a dry climate!

Science- Our plants are blooming and now we're ready for our pollinators- the bees! Students will be using bees to help pollinate the plants. These bees are not living, but will help the students understand the pollination process. Along with this, we will be learning about bees and their contribution to the plant life cycle.

Math- We started unit 5 this week. This unit introduces the basic principals of multiplication with multi-digit numbers. The lessons are designed to review and solidify knowledge of calculating the products of 1s and 10, and extend it to the products of 10s and 10s. We will be introducing different algorithms for multiplication so that students have various strategies in the math tool box!

Math 
- Our Unit 4 assessment is on Tuesday, September 23.  Students took a self-assessement today on the topics we have studied so they know what they need to spend the most time reviewing for Tuesday's test.  Please have them complete the study guide and return it as well as the self-assessment on Monday with your signature.

- Our next unit is on big numbers and estimation.  Stay tuned for more information.

Reading & Writing
-We're wrapping up our launch unit in reading this week and reviewing reading skills and strategies for a successful reading workshop.


- Students will begin drafting their narratives.  We're excited to use our iPads during this part of the writing process and look forward to getting all our ideas down about a time in our lives we will never forget.

Science
- In science this week we observed and thinned our plants.  We started graphing our data and will be interested in comparing the results of our control and experimental plants and how the variable effected them.

Social Studies
-In social studies this week we reviewed the three branches of government and created laws to take the role of the Legislative branch. Next week, we will begin learn about the culture of the Southwest region.

Friday, September 12th

Happy Friday!

In writing next week, students will begin the writing process for their first story. Today, we generated ideas for this story. Next week, we will use the writing skills we have learned thus far to write a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Students will be focusing on adding detail in their writing through the use of author's craft!

In math next week, we will be finishing unit 4. Our unit 4 test will be Tuesday, September 23rd. Students will be coming home with a study guide for this test next Friday.

In social studies next week, students will be digging deeper into the three branches of government by creating and evaluating laws. We will also begin Article Reflections, which will continue throughout the year. Your child will have more information on this next week.

Science this week was very exciting as we planted our Wisconsin fast plants and then anxiously awaited for them to sprout.  Before planting, students had to design their experiment with a variable of either less light or a change in the amount of fertilizer.  Students then planted both experimental plants and control plants.  We'll be measuring, pruning, and pollinating in the next weeks.  Stay tuned!

We have began using our iPads during math workshop and are looking forward to using them more next week!

MAP Testing: Fourth grade will be taking their Math MAP test in the afternoon on Wednesday, September 17th and Reading MAP test in the morning on Friday, September 19th.

• This week, we have kicked off our Reading & Writing units. Students are learning all of the beginning routines for reading and writing workshop.
• Spelling lists will be coming home with your child on Monday. The spelling test will be on Friday.
• In Math, students are learning about decimal place value and rounding decimals. 
• This upcoming week in Science, students will be planting their Wisconsin Fast Plants. Students will be designing an experiment with one variable. Throughout this unit, students will be tracking their plants' growth and the effect of their variable.
• Next week in Social Studies, students will be learning about the three branches of government and the responsibilities of each branch.  Students will role play the different branches of government to better understand their duties.
• Your child received a new Reading Log today. They should be recording their reading throughout the week and turn it in on Friday. 
• The students were very excited to login to their iPads. We are looking forward to begin using them next week!

Who's Your Teacher?

Hi Fourth Graders!

Letters were sent out yesterday to your homes telling you who your teacher will be for the upcoming school year.  We also included a letter letting you know a little bit about 4th Grade and giving you a web address to go to so you can take a back-to-school survey.  We're excited to start hearing from you and seeing the survey results.   Enjoy your last week of summer break!  See you on Monday:)
